Memoir Writing Course: From Diarist to Letter-Writer to Author
by Kathryn

For some, a memoir writing course is the beginning. For others, it starts earlier.

For me, it began with sensations. The feel of a pen in hand. The sight of my handwriting unspooling in black ink across a blank white page. The crisp sound of a turning new pages in a diary or journal, or brisk single sheets of fine stationery. I was a diarist as a child, recording everything from the mundane — “Another sunny day in California” — to the profound — “I caught my first fish with Dad today.”

As a teenager, I was a prolific letter-writer. With 13 pen pals at age 13, my love affair with handwritten letters was S.W.A.K.. At the same time, I was a morning paper carrier, delivering stories the old-fashioned way to my neighbours. Ink on my hands, ink in my blood: I wrote to friends, family, and even to myself, filling paper and pages with observations, emotions, and reflections on the small-town world around me. Long before I understood the power of memoir, letter writing became my private space for shaping thoughts, exploring emotions, recording life, and making sense of life’s unfolding narratives. Those early letters—tucked away in drawers, sent across oceans—were my first attempts at storytelling, my first acts of preserving personal history. Looking back, I now see that they were the foundation of my journey as a writer.

Memoir is, at its heart, an extension of this same impulse—to capture our stories, reflect on our experiences, and find deeper meaning in the moments that define us. Writing memoir is one of the most powerful ways to engage with our personal histories, giving shape to experience and creating narratives that endure. In my online memoir writing course, I guide writers through the process of turning lived experiences into compelling stories, helping them explore memory, voice, and the art of storytelling.

Why Writing Memoir is So Powerful

Writing memoir offers numerous creative, psychological, and intellectual benefits. Whether you are writing for publication, personal reflection, or as a gift for future generations, the practice of capturing your life on the page is deeply enriching. I have found my online memoir writing courses — starting next month — are some of the most popular for the following reasons.

1. Memoir Helps Us Live in a More Narrative Way

As I wrote here last month, instead of letting time slip by unnoticed, memoir invites us to reflect on the stories that define us. Writing about our experiences allows us to:

  • See patterns and themes in our lives.
  • Find deeper meaning in personal events, both joyous and challenging.
  • Reframe difficult experiences with insight and perspective.

The process of shaping our stories gives us a renewed sense of agency, reminding us that we are the authors of our own lives.

2. The Psychological Benefits of Writing

Studies show that journaling and expressive writing improve mental well-being. Writing memoir extends these benefits by offering structured reflection. Through writing, we can:

  • Process emotions and unresolved experiences.
  • Cultivate gratitude by remembering meaningful moments.
  • Strengthen cognitive function by engaging with memory and language.

Many of my students in my online memoir writing course find that writing their stories provides both clarity and catharsis, helping them understand their pasts with fresh eyes.

This article in the American Psychological Association details how expressive writing can also help with your mental health. It allows us to distance ourselves from ruminating thoughts and put some stories to bed, as it were. Read more here and learn about the important work of James Pennebaker, PhD, professor emeritus of psychology at the University of Texas at Austin. He discusses how expressive writing improves physical health and work performance by simple writing and/or talking exercises. His cross-disciplinary research is related to linguistics, clinical and cognitive psychology, communications, medicine, and computer science.

3. Memoir Connects Us to Others

One of the most rewarding aspects of memoir is its power to foster connection. Yes, with ourselves as we put pen to paper. But also through sharing our stories, we create bridges between generations, cultures, and experiences. Memoir allows us to:

  • Preserve family history and pass down wisdom.
  • Inspire and comfort others with similar experiences.
  • Contribute to the broader human conversation by documenting the unique and the universal.

Writing memoir is an act of generosity—both to oneself and to one’s readers.
