Personalised Mentoring for Creative Nonfiction Writers
If you’ve taken a course or two and now find yourself thinking, “Right, now I really need someone to walk beside me while I try to write this thing,” mentoring is the natural next step. Significant progress happens when you have wind under your wings. This programme is for beginning and developing writers who want dedicated one-to-one support—someone who will offer clarity, structure, and that gentle nudge back to the desk when procrastination begins flirting a little too boldly.
Whether your pages lean toward memoir, nature writing, travel, food, or cultural commentary, mentoring turns your early sparks of inspiration into fully formed, confidently shaped work.
The Role of a Mentor
A guide, a tutor, and a friendly accomplice in your writing ambitions.
Kathryn brings three decades of experience as a bestselling author, teacher, historian, speaker, and narrative nonfiction specialist. She works closely with writers who are still building their skills and voice—writers who want to understand not only how to write better, but also why certain choices create stronger, more resonant storytelling.
In this mentoring programme, you will:
-
Receive detailed feedback on 20 pages of writing (1 hr) + in-depth one-to-one conversation (1 hr)
- Have two dedicated hours per meeting x 8 meetings = 16 contact hours (£1750)
-
Learn how to shape essays and chapters with true narrative intention
-
Clarify what your work is trying to say (and what it accidentally says)
-
Build consistent writing habits supported by accountability
-
Strengthen your voice so it feels unmistakably your own
This is an ideal fit for writers who are crafting standalone essays, developing chapters of a longer manuscript, or steadily building confidence in the fundamentals of creative nonfiction.
What Mentoring Really Looks Like
This is an immersive, highly personalised partnership—not a class, not a template-driven programme, and not a “submit your pages and hope for the best” situation. Mentoring gives you a companion in the wilderness of writing.
Here’s how Kathryn supports you:
She reads with exceptional attention
Your pages receive close, careful consideration—line by line, scene by scene. Kathryn notices what’s alive, what’s unclear, what’s quietly blooming, and what’s standing in the corner wishing someone would invite it into the story.
She honours your goals, even the ambitious ones
Whatever you hope to accomplish—publishing an essay, shaping a memoir, or simply learning the craft—your aims are taken seriously. No dream is dismissed, downsized, or padded into something more “sensible.” Together we explore, we dream, and we create an actionable plan.
She gives clear, candid feedback—always with warmth
Think of this as truth delivered kindly. You’ll receive practical, specific guidance that helps you revise without dread and improve without feeling scolded. Expect clarity, humanity, and the occasional well-timed laugh, and a plan for each session.
She teaches skills that last far beyond this programme
You’ll learn how to think structurally, revise strategically, build scenes, refine voice, strengthen pacing, and understand the emotional and intellectual core of your work. By the end, you’ll be a more capable and confident writer—not just the author of a more polished draft.
What’s Included
Eight private one-hour Zoom sessions
Writing is truly a collaborative process. These lively, in-depth conversations bring focus, clarity, accountability, and space to ask every question you thought other writers magically knew. Second to developing your ideas alone, these conversation tap into ideas and transport you out of the echo chamber of your own mind and into the realm of possibility.
Up to 20 pages per session
Submit work before each live, one-to-one meeting for a close reading and detailed feedback, returned to your prior to the meeting. Essays, chapters, or exploratory drafts are all welcome.
Written editorial notes + discussion
You’ll receive comprehensive comments on each submission, followed by a live editorial session to talk through ideas, next steps, and revision strategies.
Scheduling shaped around your life
Choose weekly, fortnightly, or monthly sessions—whatever rhythm helps you stay engaged without becoming overwhelmed.
How Your Writing Will Change
Over time, your pages will become:
-
Clearer in intention
-
Stronger in structure
-
More confident in voice
-
More emotionally and intellectually resonant
- Overall, much richer narrative nonfiction with as many artistic paths explored
You will develop a deeper understanding of your own processes—your habits, your strengths, your creative sticking points—and learn how to support yourself as a writer long after the programme ends.
Mentoring enriches not just the manuscript, but the person creating it. Writers frequently leave with renewed purpose, steadier confidence, and a writing practice that feels both sustainable and meaningful.
Ready to Start?
Spaces are limited to ensure each writer receives genuine attention and care. If you’re ready to commit to your writing, grow your craft, and work alongside a mentor who is invested in your progress, this programme may be the perfect fit.

TESTIMONIALS
“Mentorship from Kathryn has proven invaluable. I’m difficult to teach and I think she realised this early on, throughout our times together she guided and pushed me in very constructive ways to question myself, my direction and to explore effective ways of conveying my ideas to a wider audience. With Kathryn’s teaching and support I’ve developed a book proposal that brings together seemingly disparate subject matter into compelling narrative non-fiction. She helped me to question my writing style and to enhance it in new ways. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Kathryn. Her guidance will take your writing to new levels.’ — Heather, Leeds, England
“Kathryn has an uncanny ability to understand who you are and where you want to go as a writer and unlock your potential step-by-step with patience, respect, and eloquence. She is a creative, fun, and resourceful teacher and artist who won’t hold back from you her insights into the inner workings of the publishing world. She’s a gem of a mentor.” — Onur, Washington, D. C.“Kathryn is an exceptional teacher. As a best-selling author, she knows the publishing industry first-hand. And she is highly adept at refining one’s technical skills without stifling a writer’s voice. Without her mentoring, I would be stumbling along in the dark along my path to publication. Her guidance, support, and knowledge are game changers.” — Lise, Los Angeles, California
“Kathryn was a fabulous mentor at a time when I needed it the most. I was working on the manuscript of my first nonfiction book, and Kathryn had recently finished Writing Wild, which has a similar structure to mine. She provided wonderful advice about how to balance different chapters, how to better tell a story, and always reminded me to be specific rather than vague. Kathryn gave me courage to pursue interviews with higher profile people than I would have otherwise approached, and boosted my confidence as a writer. Our weekly call gave me goals, a schedule, and kept me accountable in my writing process. Because of Kathryn, I had a clearer sense of what makes a full-length nonfiction book work and how to get there. Working with her while I was in the final stages of my manuscript dramatically improved my final product and gave me skills that I will carry with me for my writing career.” — McKenzie Long, California, author of This Contested Land (University of Minnesota Press)
“Through both classes and one-on-one coaching, Kathryn has helped me make my writing come alive. After many years in academia, it was a little dry, to say the least! Now my writing flows and is full of vivid details and imagery. It’s fun to read, unlike my previous style which was more akin to a peer-reviewed journal article. I was also struggling with imposter syndrome. I had almost put a book project that’s close to my heart on indefinite hold, feeling that I was not truly qualified to write it. She helped me work through those feelings and develop language for my introduction that puts my (actually extensive) expertise into context. After just one session with Kathryn, I was unstuck and moving forward. The project is back on track!” — Rachel S., Tulsa, Oklahoma
“You know the saying. ‘When the student is ready, the teacher appears…’ After a 20 year creative hiatus to raise my daughter, I was ready to get back to writing but floundering. A Google search for a writing retreat brought me to Kathryn’s site and I had found my teacher. A year later, I have published my first essay and written the draft of a novel. In class and one-to-one mentoring, Kathryn taught me the elements of effective writing, introduced me to a treasure trove of writers who use those elements so beautifully, and helped me find and develop my unique writing voice. She also connected me to a community of writers where I have made lifetime friends. The rest of the saying goes: ‘When the student is truly ready, the teacher disappears.’ I have a feeling I will be studying with Katy for a while yet as she has so much to give.” — Francesca, New Hampshire
